Drive to Sheki. From Gabala to Sheki (~ 155 km, 2-2,5 hours).

One of the most ancient cities of Azerbaijan, Sheki is rightly called the architectural reserve of the country. Of particular interest to the tourists from all over the world is the Palace of Sheki Khans (1762) – a rare example of combining the national and palace architecture traditions. It is remarkable that during the construction of the palace, not a single nail was used, and the colored glass for shebeke (national mosaic) was brought from Venice.

There are many interesting historical monuments in Sheki. To the north of the city there are the ruins of the once impregnable fortress "Gelersan – gerarsan" (“come and see“) dated by the XV-XVIII centuries. There were many caravanserais in Sheki, which was famous for its trade. Two of them are still here today; the Upper and the Lower Caravanserais, both built in the XVIII century. Not to mention the Albanian temple in the village of Kish (I-II centuries), where the famous Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl has repeatedly researched, as evidenced here by the mounted bust of the traveler.

Finally, Sheki is also famous for its mouth melting baklava, soup piti (stew with vegetables in a clay pot), and the sense of humor of its people.

Visit Gala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex.

One of the oldest settlements in Absheron is Gala village that is located in the northeast of the Peninsula. There are 215 architectural and archaeological monuments in Gala village and the surrounding regions. The environment which is dated back to 3rd millennium BC is preserved here. There are several architectural monuments – 5 mosques, 3 bathhouses, 4 water houses (ovdan), houses, agricultural buildings, sepulchers, tombs, barrows, remnants of castle, etc. – of historical importance in Gala which belong to the period between 3rd millennium BC and 20th century.

In 2008, the first “Outdoor Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum Complex” was created in the territory of Gala Historical and Ethnographic Reserve. Archaeological, architectural monuments found in the territory of Absheron were gathered and restored in the Museum Complex. Barrows, houses and other architectural monuments belonging to 3rd- 2nd millennium BC, are set as their originals in this area. A wonderful environment was created to observe the pearls of Azerbaijani history in this museum complex which has a territory of 1.2 hectares.

Visit Ateshgah & Yanar Dagh Tour. The Baku Ateshgah or "Fire Temple" is a castle-like religious structure in Surakhani, 30 km from Baku. The pentagonal complex, which has a courtyard surrounded by cells for monks and a tetrapillar-altar in the middle, was built during the 17th and 18th centuries. It was abandoned after 1883 when oil and gas plants were established in the vicinity. The complex was turned into a museum in 1975 and now receives 15,000 visitors a year. One of the most famous and popular tourist places of the "eternal flame” in Azerbaijan is the mountain of Yanar Dagh. Actually, it is rather a hill than a mountain, with natural gas burning on its slope from ancient times. Meter-long tongues of fire are licking the stratified earth approximately for 10 m in width, searing those who approached too close. People occupy the benches to watch the blazing hill in the evening, when the its sight is most effective.

Yanar Dagh is located 25 km to the north from Baku, in Mohamed village. There are buses running to it from the city, so you can get there fairly cheap and easy. From the year 2007 Yanar Dagh is declared a state-protected conservation area.
